Invited Talk 1: “Secure and Resilient Cloud and Mobile Services”

Abstract:
Exactly 20 years ago, Prof Ross Anderson from Cambridge University published a widely respected article, titled “Why Cryptosystems Fail” in which the author demonstrated that the problems rely not in the strength of encryption, but in the ecosystem. In light with this approach, it is time to look at security environments commonly deployed in Asia and elsewhere, analyze the reasons of their failure from a business efficiency perspective, and suggest a more effective alternative. Some recent publicized cyber war stories exemplified the need for going beyond having a secured environment: many organizations apply a "bank vault" approach when devising and running their environment. Most of the time, this approach is totally inappropriate when serious incidents happen. The three points that this presentation will make include: i) review what went wrong, and why, ii) rather than looking at being secure, organizations ought to look at being resilient, and understand the mindset shift associated with this evolution and iii) cloud and mobility are critical components to building a resilient environment, and need to be considered in light with their pros and cons.
Biography:
Pierre Noel is the Chief Security Officer and Advisor for Microsoft in Asia. A Belgian citizen living in Asia for the past 20 years, Pierre has over 25 years of international experience in Information Security and Enterprise Risk Management. Pierre designed and built complete Security and Enterprise Risk Management environments for Governments, Finance, Transport and large conglomerate industries over the World. Prior responsibilities are: i) Worldwide Executive at IBM with responsibility for the IBM Security portfolio, ii) CEO Arial Group International, offering Enterprise Risk Management to Fortune 1000, iii) CEO TruSecure/ICSA Corp, iv) Client lead Partner at KPMG, Greater China territory, in charge of Enterprise Risk Management, Corporate Risk & Governance, v) Director PLATINUM Technologies Asia Pacific and vi) Advisor to many governments and Fortune 1000 organizations in Asia, Europe and Americas. And Pierre is also lectures at various universities in the World. He has a degree in Computer Science from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles.


Invited Talk 2: “New Business Opportunity in Big Data Era”

Abstract:
Nowadays, "Big Data" would be one of the hottest issues on the world. Even though many people were realizing the importance of big data and the great amount of data were being generated every second, big data were not utilized and thrown away because of their massive volume in the past. But they are utilized in the most of all industries due to the development of computing environment. As peoples are considering big data as a core technology for future, the governments of many countries including USA support strongly the researches for utilizing Big Data. In this talk, the characteristics of big data and the reason why the big data become a hottest issue are mentioned. And how the big data are providing new business opportunity in every industry is also described.
Biography:
Jihie Kim is the director of the Future Technologies Lab at KT. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science and Statistics from Seoul National University, and a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California. She has been working at USC Information Sciences Institute, leading many NSF (National Science Foundation) projects on social dialogue, pedagogical technologies, and intelligent interfaces. At USC, she initiated research on on-line discussion board and assessment of threaded discussions, leading to synergistic work among knowledge base experts, educational psychologists, NLP researchers, and educators. She developed a novel workflow portal that supports efficient assessment of online discussion activities. In order to develop a research community for improving collaborative learning and communication in education, she created two workshops on Intelligent Support for Learning in Groups. She is currently editing an IJAIED journal special issue on the topic. Dr. Kim was the general chair of the IUI (Intelligent User Interfaces) conference 2013 and the poster co-chair of the AI in Education conference 2013. She was the publicity chair for the AI in Education conference in 2007. She served as the workshop and tutorial chair of the IUI 2005 conference and as the publicity chair of the IUI Conference in 2003 and 2004. She has been the program committee member of AAAI, AIEd, EDM, IUI, WWW, K-CAP, SocialCom, Social Informatics, CADUI conferences, and refereed papers for various AI and user interfaces journals and conferences.


Invited Talk 3: “Digital Signage: Trends, Systems, and Services”
Dr. Katsuhiko Kawazoe, Vice President, NTT

Abstract:
Digital signage expansion has attracted a lot of attention as a way to distribute media to the public. In the digital signage industry, proprietary technology has constituted the market to date. For even greater growth it is necessary to reduce overall costs of digital signage platform and to enhance communication between personal devices (smart phones, tablets) and widespread digital signage. Utilization of a global standardized technology is expected to expand the range of application of these services and make it easier to work together with web technology such as HTML5 and thus make it possible to pioneer a new global market. In this presentation, the trends of signage systems, services and a global standardization of digital signage are introduced.
Biography:
Katsuhiko Kawazoe received both his bachelor and master degree of Engineering from Waseda University in Japan in 1985 and 1987, respectively. Since joining NTT in 1987, he has mainly been engaged in R&D of radio communication systems, satellite communication systems, and the personal handy-phone system (PHS). His specialty is highly efficient data transmission schemes for integrated-media systems. In 2003, he was appointed to Director of NTT Cyber Solutions Laboratories. He was engaged in the R&D project of the broadband service which cooperated with broadcast. In 2008, he was appointed to Chief Producer of content distribution in R&D Planning Department. From July, 2013, he is the present post, vice president, executive manager, R&D produce group R&D planning and department, NTT Corporation. He received the Ph.D. degree in information engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. He is currently a co-chairman of Digital Signage Consortium Japan and a director of IPTV forum Japan. He received the Young Engineer Award from IEICE in 1995 and Takayanagi Commemoration Encouragement Prize in 2007.

Invited Talk 4: “Vision and Key Features for 5th Generation Cellular”

Abstract:
This talk presents how the predicted mobile traffic explosion in the coming years can be accommodated by utilizing wide spectrum in the rather underutilized mmWave bands in conjunction with novel physical and network layer technologies such as BS-MS adaptive joint beamforming. We will take an in-depth look into the propagation characteristics in the mmWave bands, especially around 28GHz, along with channel measurement results at Austin, Texas, Manhattan and in Korea. In addition, the results of the initial field tests carried out in Suwon, Korea using the PoC (Proof-of-Concept) system operating at 28GHz will be described showing the feasibility of cellular operation at such high frequencies. Test results for LoS (Line-of-Sight) range, Non-LoS operation, outdoor-to-indoor penetration and mobility will be presented.
Biography:
Dr. Kyungwhoon Cheun received his B.S. in Electronics Engineering from Seoul National University in 1985. He earned is M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1987 and 1989, respectively. He was an assistant professor at University of Delaware from 1989 to 1991 and joined the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in 1991 where he is currently a full professor. At POSTECH, he headed the national ITRC center for Broadband OFDM Multiple Access (BrOMA), an 8 year research program supported by the Korean Ministry of Knowledge and Economy. Dr. Cheun has also served as an engineering consultant to numerous industry and was on leave at Witechs and NSystems in San Diego where he developed efficient receiver algorithms for the IEEE802.11 based WLANs and WCDMA. Aside from his academic duties, he served as the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) for Pulsus Technologies Inc. during 2004 to 2011, a Qualcomm partner company where he was in change or developing sound processing algorithms and sigma-delta modulation based full digital audio amplifier SoCs. Since 2012 he has been with Samsung Electronics DMC R&D Center as a senior vice president and leads the Communications Research Team in the area of next generation cellular and Wi-Fi networks.

Cloud computing has changed the way people do business and live from consumer to large enterprise. Cloud computing is not only a buzz word anymore and the adoption rate is really amazing across all industries. With exponential of data growth in Cloud, it's very challenge to make infrastructure ready for the growth and survive in global competitiveness. This talk will cover the new idea how to adapt Virtual Network Storage technology for Cloud infrastructure which aiming to lower cost and maintain SLA to Cloud service.
Biography:
Paisit Wongsongsarn joined Oracle Corporation Asia Pacific as part of Sun Microsystems acquisition on 2009. He joined Sun Microsystems since 1996 in technical consulting role. In his current role (Director of Storage Architect, APAC), he is responsible for helping customers within Asia Pacific region to solve business problem in area of data management challenge (backup/recovery, disaster recovery, system performance, information life cycle management, network & cloud storage) from defining the right strategy, select the appropriate implementation approach, optimize the design for cost/performance, sharing the best practice. Prior to the current position, he was Chief Technologist for Enterprise Architect in ASEAN region and he was responsible for designing/verifying complex data management architecture for key customers. During his technical consulting combined in Sun/Oracle spans over 17 years, he was involved in various strategic projects in financial services, telecommunication, service providers and government. He also has experience in various roles such as technical consulting, professional service, partner enablement, technical management. In 2008, He has received honored title as Global Principal Engineer. Paisit Wongsongsarn graduated from King Mongkut's Institute of Ladkrabang (Thailand) with degree of Computing Engineering. He also holds a Master Business Administration degree from Ramkamhaeng University (Thailand).


Invited Talk 6: “Future Smart TV Technologies”

Abstract:
LG electronics expects that smart TV technology will be developed from the web. We believe the web will be the source where you can find everything you need including data, app, algorism, even TV channel. Thus, our goal is to strengthen connectivity between devices so that you can enjoy the same user environment and experience whatever devices you have.
Biography:
Baegeun Kang has participated to develop the G4-Fax OSI 7 Layer communication SW develop internet-based VOD system until 1996 since he joined the LG R&D center in 1991. As a SW development leader at DTV R&D Center, he developed Time Machine TV (the world’s first HD-level DVR Built-in TV) and led the design of Time Machine TV SW architecture until 2005. As a SW research team leader, he directed DTV SW development and established TSP SW development process by 2007. Until 2008, he developed SW for PDP market as a head of PDP research team. Then, he handled Smart TV SW Platform development, developed NetCast 2.0/3.0, led the 3DTV development, and created Smart TV Eco System while serving as a head of LCD Research team. Currently, He is commanding webOS TV SW development as a SW development Group leader at TV R&D Center.
